The City of Krems

Krems is university town rich in tradition and is justifiably called the education capital of Lower Austria. During term time the town is characterised by its some 9,000 pupils and students. With an investment of 72.7 million euros, the town’s student population is about to rise by 4,500 students thanks to the new „Campus Krems“. The town’s flair and the cultural and leisure activities it offers means that students get to feel at home and enjoy their university years here.

Krems, with its population of 25,000 people, is one of the oldest towns in the country and was first mentioned in 995. The town is characterised by its historic buildings which contribute to its distinctive feel. Everywhere you go you are confronted by 1,000 years of history – on the streets and in the squares, in the old monasteries and churches and in the town houses and forts. A walk through Krems and Stein is always worth it. And afterwards you can relax and enjoy the open-air cafes, restaurants and taverns. Krems has one of the most beautiful and lively pedestrian areas in Austria where shopping in the old town becomes a real experience.

Krems has its own festival which attracts thousands of visitors each year who come to sample the wide programme of events and the diverse range of music and theatre. The town has also become an established centre for contemporary art and culture – for example, it is has the Krems art quarter, home to the Caricature and Literature Museum and the art gallery. Krems’ gallery – the biggest in Austria – has hosted many renowned exhibitions of 19th and 20th century art.

A wide variety of firms have also set up offices at the town’s business and industry park, built on a 100 hectare green-field site. The RIZ-Krems business start-up centre has set a leading example for other companies wishing to move to Krems through its work with young, innovative firms to create a successful cluster of biotech businesses. Training, research and practical work are tied together in a perfect symbiosis and it is no coincidence that firms are moving to Krems – the town which offers science, research and education in one place.

In such a high-achieving environment fitness and well-being are important commodities and also provide an excellent balance to studying. The stunning vineyards around Krems offer the opportunity for jogging, mountain biking, inline skating and relaxation. Simultaneously romantic, traditional and homely, the town is also innovative, cosmopolitan and welcoming – opposites which are united harmoniously in Krems.
